Who we are

GlobeKnow is a free geography quiz game available at globeknow.com. It is operated by an individual based in the United Kingdom. If you have any questions about this policy, you can contact us at guyatolla@gmail.com.

What data we collect and why

Player name and scores (leaderboard) — If you choose to enter a name and submit a score to the daily leaderboard, your name and score are stored in our database. This is entirely optional. You can play anonymously at any time. The leaderboard is publicly visible, so do not use your full name or any sensitive information as your display name.

Gameplay data stored on your device — Your player name, best scores, daily streak, and daily results are saved in your browser's localStorage. This data never leaves your device and is not transmitted to us. It will be lost if you clear your browser data.

No cookies — We do not use cookies for tracking, advertising, or analytics.

Third-party services

The leaderboard is powered by Firebase Realtime Database, a service provided by Google LLC. When you interact with the leaderboard, your data (including your IP address) may be processed by Google in accordance with Google's Privacy Policy. We do not use Google Analytics or any advertising services.

Map data is fetched from GitHub (raw.githubusercontent.com) and Natural Earth at game start. This is a standard web request and may log your IP address in their server logs.

How long we keep your data

Leaderboard entries (name and score) are retained indefinitely to preserve the leaderboard history. If you would like your entry removed, contact us at the email above and we will delete it promptly.

Your rights (UK & EU users)

Under the UK GDPR and EU GDPR, you have the right to access, correct, or request deletion of any personal data we hold about you. To exercise these rights, email us at guyatolla@gmail.com. We will respond within 30 days.

Children

GlobeKnow is suitable for all ages. We do not knowingly collect personal data from children under 13. If you believe a child has submitted personal data, please contact us and we will remove it.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy from time to time. The date at the top of this page will always reflect the latest version. Continued use of the site after changes are posted constitutes your acceptance of the revised policy.

By using GlobeKnow at globeknow.com, you agree to these terms. If you do not agree, please don't use the site. These terms are governed by the laws of England and Wales.

Use of the service

GlobeKnow is a free geography quiz game provided for personal, non-commercial entertainment. You may use it as intended — playing games, competing on the leaderboard, and sharing your scores.

You may not:

• Use automated scripts, bots, or any other means to submit false or inflated scores to the leaderboard
• Attempt to reverse-engineer, scrape, or disrupt the service
• Submit offensive, harmful, or misleading content as a player name
• Use the service in any way that violates applicable law

Leaderboard

The leaderboard is publicly visible. By submitting your name and score, you consent to this data being displayed publicly. We reserve the right to remove any leaderboard entry at our discretion, including entries that appear to be cheated, offensive, or otherwise inappropriate.

Availability

GlobeKnow is a hobby project provided free of charge and without any guarantee of uptime or continued availability. We may change, suspend, or discontinue the service at any time without notice.

Disclaimer of warranties

GlobeKnow is provided "as is" without warranty of any kind. We make no guarantees that the service will be error-free, uninterrupted, or suitable for any particular purpose. Use it at your own risk.

We may update these terms at any time. Continued use of the site after changes are posted means you accept the updated terms.

Map data

Natural Earth — world country boundaries (1:50m scale). Natural Earth is a public domain map dataset made by volunteers and supported by the North American Cartographic Information Society (NACIS). Free to use with no attribution required, but we're happy to give credit.

World GeoJSON sourced from the nvkelso/natural-earth-vector repository on GitHub (public domain).

US States GeoJSON sourced from PublicaMundi/MappingAPI on GitHub (public domain).

Infrastructure

Firebase Realtime Database by Google — used to store and serve leaderboard data.

QR codes

Room invite QR codes are generated client-side using qrcode.js by davidshimjs (MIT licence).
